WHEN THE OIL BEGAN WASHING ASHORE, Texas Tech University
researchers at The Institute of Environmental and Human Health (TIEHH)
didn’t wait for an invitation to start finding solutions. TIEHH scientists
literally wrote the book on assessing the environmental impact of different
contamination scenarios, and right now more than 20 of them are
working to understand the science of the oil spill from an ecotoxicological
standpoint. As you read these words, they are studying the environmental
chemistry of the oil, assessing its impact on Gulf wildlife, and developing
a remediation system using nonwoven cotton to absorb and remove it.
